'5 Blogs That Make Me Think'

Global Kids' Digital Media Initiative - Global Kid's relentless production always amazes me. Founded in 1989 and incorporated as an independent non-profit organization in 1993, Global Kids, Inc.™ educates youth about critical international and domestic issues and provides educators with strategies for integrating experiential learning methods into urban classrooms.

Since 2000, Global Kids Online Leadership Program, led by Barry Joseph, has been adapting a most successful youth development model to the internet, creating new opportunities for bringing civic engagement, global awareness and leadership development to youth around the world through online game, online dialogues, and social actions.

I feel a compelling need to publish a new post each time GKs manage another breakthrough. It is a sort of personal celebration -- Global Kids challenging us to play a better future! Global Kids have a dedicated category in my blog, as I anticipate a series of breakthroughs in a near future.

SElearninggames, by Sandra Dickinson, is a running conversation about, by, and for social entrepreneurs making a learning game to accelerate earned income venture profitability. In her Social Entrepreneurs Learning Game Manifesto, she reveals she has been thinking about nonprofit social entrepreneurs making a learning game together for so long, that she finally decided to blog about it. And, not just blog about it. She has set up a wikispace for us to DO IT!

There are over 550,000 social entrepreneurs in the U.S. – nonprofit organizations who are starting and growing earned income ventures to support their missions. Surveys indicate that slightly less than half of these ventures are profitable. Sandra's current passion = social entrepreneurs elearning games to solve the mystery of venture profitability and make this effort sustainable.

BEEweb is a serious games project based which is focused on k-8 multiplayer educational gaming using a new kind of motivational structure. It turns kids into each other teachers and can scale P2P to millions for free. They have 4 games so far, won 3 "Bessies" and have more on the way.

Avant Game, by Jane McGonigal. Jane is a game designer, a games researcher, and a future forecaster. She makes games that give a damn. She studies how games change lives. She spends a lot of her time figuring out how the games we play today shape our real-world future. And so she's trying to make sure that a game developer wins a Nobel Prize by the year 2032.
