Via: Global Kids’ Digital Media Initiative – Playing 4 Keeps

Global Kids to launch CONSENT! aiming at building awareness among young people around the complicated nature of informed consent within a coercive environment.

Global Kids is a world leader in using virtual worlds for education. Global Kids work in Second Life builds upon its more than 15 years of experience in youth leadership development and international affairs education, as well as its role as a national leader in using serious online games for educational purposes.

Global Kids' Second Life programs offer young people a world in which their characters can take part in myriad workshops and games that educate them about major world issues and events, from the International Criminal Court to global warming and child labor.

Playing 4 Keeps is an innovative youth media project, in which a team of Global Kids Leaders at South Shore High School is gaining leadership and game design skills that they will use to develop and produce a socially conscious online game each year.

This year, participants chose to focus their game on the topic of informed consent within a coercive environment.
Their goal is to draw attention to historical medical research within the American prison system -- from World War II to date. They want people to be informed and feel hopeful there is something they can do about it.

Concept Overview

Players will travel through six decades of the American prison system and be confronted with situations in which their decisions will affect survival and life after prison.

The Experience

The entire prison experience is time based, one decade at a time, and divided into 3 time periods: 40s – 60s, 70s - 90s and the present

The 40s-60s represents the introduction of “consent” to the process of medical experimentation, in which prisoners had to agree to the experimentation.

The 70s-90s is about “informed consent” which, in response to the public awareness of the abuses, changed research policy to either eliminate or insure that the prisoners were properly informed about the risks involved.

In the present period, two forces are in tension: the interest in increasing medical research in prisons, often driven by pharmaceutical companies, and those who want to eliminate prison research, often driven by prison advocates and medical ethicist.

Finally the prisoner reaches parole, when the prisoner can see his status on health, self-esteem and injuries due to experimentation.

Players will receive a server-generated customized notecard, with a fairly complex back end. The content is based on an analysis of their final status and describes their life after prison as a result of what they experienced while in prison.
